The Young Adult Volunteer Program of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) offers exciting opportunities in Christian service for young adults (19 to 30 years of age). Young Adult Volunteers serve in communities of need for one academic year (beginning in September). The job descriptions for the volunteers depend both on the needs of our partners and the skills of the Young Adult Volunteer. In their placements, volunteers work with a church or organization as well as develop Christian community and meet regularly for prayer and Bible study with other Young Adult Volunteers. Their year of service includes working closely with mentors in the program, exploration of their Christian vocation and an opportunity to integrate the experience at an end-of-term conference.

Twenty-three Young Adult Volunteers have already served on the Gulf Coast in the last two years. We are looking to expand the program. We are seeking young adults who have a passion to make a difference as they explore what it means to live a life of faith in service.

Potential candidates for the Young Adult Volunteer program are encouraged to contact Gregory Boettner or Amelia Lorenz at 228-547-0822 or greg@yavgulfcoast.org. Interviews for this year’s class of Young Adult Volunteers have begun and will continue until the positions are filled.

The Presbytery of South Louisiana’s Project Homecoming has several positions open for construction assistants/volunteer managers for its rebuilding and recovery initiative in the Greater New Orleans area. Successful applicants will be working at Project Homecoming as construction assistants/volunteer managers. The position is supervised by construction supervisers and involves direct interactions with teams of volunteers who come weekly to New Orleans to reconstruct hurricane-damaged homes for low-income persons. Applicants must have a heart for service, as these positions are available through Louisiana Delta Service Corps, a program of Americorps.

Those who are interested in serving as construction assistants/volunteer managers with Project Homecoming will need to apply and be accepted through the Louisiana Delta Service Corps program. The positions are for 11 months beginning September 1, 2008 and ending July 31, 2009. Delta Service Corps members are paid $11,400 and also receive a $4,725 education award upon completion of the 11-month service year. The education award can be used to pay off existing student loans or for future education costs. The Presbytery of South Louisiana/Project Homecoming will add to these benefits a housing supplement of $400/month for each Corps member.

Corps members must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, no felonies, an upbeat attitude and a passion for community service.

For more information or to apply for one of the positions within the Presbytery of South Louisiana, visit the Louisiana Delta Corps website and click on Corps Member Application 08-09. In the “Location” blank on the application, please put Project Homecoming/Presbytery of South Louisiana. Applications are due by July 3.

Jim Moose of New Wilmington Presbyterian Church was inspired to help hurricane survivors in this way after a mission trip came back with the story of a person who was moved to tears after receiving donated furniture for her Habitat home. The recipient of the furniture had not had a dining room table in three years, and the same is still true for thousands of families in New Orleans. We are grateful to our friends in Pennsylvania for their thoughtfulness and hard work, and we are trusting God to also bring some chairs our way!

Have you ever looked at a picture and couldn’t help but smile? This picture (below) is worth the proverbial thousand words.

April 23 marked the return of Joan Hamilton to her home in New Orleans east after a long wait for so many pieces which have to come together to warrant the celebration and joy of return. By coincidence, Rev. Ken Kovacks from the Catonsville Presbyterian Church happened to be in town and was able to join in. His church helped in so many blessed ways.

Family, friends and volunteers filled Joan’s home and shared the joy, recovery stories, and home cooked red beans and rice.

The Jefferson Presbyterian Church in Jefferson, LA (a neighboring community to New Orleans) was struck by lightning early April 5th and the interior was destroyed.

Speaking with Elder Nancy Pearson, she relates that ATF and insurance evaluations are going on at this moment to confirm the origins of the fire so that insurance adjusters can start their part of the recovery and gutting and rebuilding plans can begin.

At this point, services are being held in the Fellowship Hall and they have basic materials to continue with worship.

Elizabeth Ford-Jones, the volunteer site coordinator for Jefferson, confirms that they are still able to house volunteers and support the Project Homecoming rebuilding efforts. In fact, the Guniston PC from Airville, PA had just pulled in for their 10th rebuild trip on Sunday and immediately jumped in to help to adjust the Fellowship Hall to their temporary configuration.

A church member was quoted in the New Orleans Times-Picayune: “We’ll rebuild,” said Ingeborg Crain (86) a member since 1929, “It’s not the building: it’s the people. We trust in God that we will rebuild.”

If there are any questions or added information Nancy Pearson will be in contact person and can be reached at (504) 376-2406 or pearson_nl@jpso.com.
